MOSAIC MAPPING

Combine Orthophotos to Produce a Mosaic

A Mosaic is comprised of two or more single Orthophotos – geo-referenced images – covering a particular area of interest. Creating a seamless, ortho-rectified mosaic of images makes it possible to process data from adjoining or partially overlapping territory for large-scale applications – especially mapping, monitoring and classification. The prerequisites and technical data of a Mosaic are the same as those of a single Orthophoto Product. Once processed into a Mosaic, geographic points of reference must be labeled for it to be ready for use. In addition to Mosaic mapping, these products may be used for other GIS applications, such as the production of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and Digital Terrain Models (DTMs). Mosaic Mapping is commonly used for regional and national development projects – whether for urban or rural areas. Forestry management projects, for instance, employ Mosaic Mapping in order to plan fire breaks, deforestation and replanting; to monitor wildlife concentrations and logging; to identify water resources; to document vegetation diversity, etc. General applications include research and planning, monitoring and development. The contribution of Mosaics to Geographic Information Systems is significant, as their data may be reused efficiently and accurately as part of a geospatial data bank.
